Joshua Burtwistle

Joshua studied Computer Science at the University of Strathclyde, where he took a particular interest in Computational Complexity Theory and Artificial Intelligence. After graduating with a First-Class Honours degree, he (very predictably) decided to enrol on the University of Glasgow’s Creative Writing Programme, where he focussed mainly on short-stories before gathering up the gumption to begin writing a novel.

He maintains that programming and creative writing aren’t as disparate as they seem, with a good piece of code and a good poem often having more than a little in common. He also asserts unequivocally that if any programming language were to fully qualify as poetry, it would be Haskell.

Josh joined NCR Edinburgh as a Software Engineer in 2015, attracted by the opportunity to develop innovative software solutions as part of a passionate, agile and fiercely intelligent community.

When he isn’t reading or writing (code or fiction), he enjoys classical music, disney movies and global politics.

One day, he hopes to win the Forward Prize for Poetry with a collection of Haskell-based limericks, but he accepts that this is about as likely as a Computer Scientist enrolling on a Creative Writing Programme.
