As part of the things that NCR Edinburgh offers its staff, training and continuous development is one of the most important. For this, we have training days and guilds.
All members of staff are given 10 training days a year. They can play with a new technology, do a training course, read a book or experiment with an existing technology and make it better! After they have completed their training days, we encourage them to share what they have learnt with their colleagues and the wider world. Staff will either write a blog post or will deliver a presentation at our weekly office meetings, showcasing what they loved, or hated, about what they worked on.
Some of the training days have looked at Docker, Hapi.js, JavaScript promises, Service Worker, Rust and Scala. If you had the chance, what would you work on?
What is a guild? A collection of people who share a passion about a subject and share their knowledge. NCR Edinburgh has it's own guilds, where staff members get together on a regular basis to talk about a subject. The guilds cover a wide range of subjects and are all delivered differently. The Functional Programming Guild delivers lecture-style meetings, showing the ins and outs of functional programming. The Web Guild and Agile Guild vary, sometimes doing Lean Coffee discussions, other times getting different staff members to present. The idea of the guilds are continuous training, with colleagues who are experts on hand to ask all those tricky questions to.
